When training turns to bleeding

I think most of us have been there before, Well i know i have . I use to be a bicycle courier , so i've left my fair share of skin on the ground, It's like a right of passage as a courier, If you turn up to work bleeding every-where "your cool" So i had my share of "cool" moments.
Anyway enough about me.

On this Occasion it was a Kristian Manietta out on a training ride preparing for Kona, when one thing led to another , then that thing leading him to another thing resulting in him eating the road... Ouch ..
A very unfortunate accident , Here's hoping he heals up quickly and can get back out on the road.... Chicks dig scars , so Charlotte probably loves him more now..
Heal fast matey... and thanks for the pic's...

Update from Rome (again)

Its been a busy week , the open water races are the only events on at the moment ,
But that doesnt stop the mayhem at the pool . We have been extremely busy making sure all the swimmers are kitted out and confident leading into there events. (wheather that be pool or open water)
See attached photo’s:

1) Brian Ryckeman and Maarten Van der Weijden talking about the mens 10k race afterwards
2) The booth where we have been providing suits for the swimmers during the week leading into competition. ( it's like sitting in a sauna down there)
3) Brendan Capell ( minutes away from the start of the men's 25k ) He's out there racing right now and one of the top favorites for the win.
I'll keep you posted with results.
The blueseventy nero 10k has been the choice of suit for open water swimmers with the majority choosing the wear our suits no matter the distance 5, 10 or 25 k.

Tuesday 21 July 2009

ROME day 3 but really day 1.Reporting : Guy Crawford – and the ever chatty Dean Jackson

The first day has seen a phenomenal success for all athletes wearing the blueseventy 10k swimskins.

Results: Bronze Medal for POLIANA OKIMOTO ( Brazil) in the Women’s 5km competition
Sadly no medals in the men’s race but with the blueseventy nero 10k suit being the only Open Water specific swimskin it was clear which swimsuit was the preferred brand.

Activities:
Maarten Van Der Weijden Olympic Gold Medalist joined myself (Guy) and Steve Munatones to give a live twitter update of the race that was witnessed by several thousand (so our sources lead us to believe)
We helped Maarten to gain a VIP pass for the duration of the event (can you believe a Gold Medalist didn’t get one!!) For this Guy had to show a nipple….

Additionally, strong and future profitable alliances were made with all National Governing Bodies partaking in Open Water events (Specifically GB, USA and Brazil)

Further conversations with the BBC are looking fruitful for a televised piece from our living room showing all our suits on Thursday. For this Guy had to show other nipple….

Update: Found that Italy does not believe in the internet, IT has a different meaning here. BUT we will find a way for more in-depth reporting following another day in the water. (thanks to Jane in our New Zealand office for typing this up via phone)

Rome

I've made it to Rome and wow it's been a busy few days
The traffic here is enough to stress any-one out, I think it's warming me up for my travels to Asia.
being a cyclist here would scare me and i was a bicycle courier for 4 years... i think thats saying something...but when the rules are ... "there are no rules"...... it gets scary. (half of me still likes it ) but i must be getting old cause i'm more cautious.
Good news on the traffic front , i got really lost yesterday and drove to the Colosseum .. which was awesome. ( i filmed it whist driving very badly)

Then i slept like a dead man.
And here begins day two,

Today was an epic day of meeting swimmers coaches and some managers.
I love hanging with these open water swimmers, for top end swimmers they are just so mellow.
An example , All of there races have been postponed due to bad seas, no-one knew where the new event would be held until this afternoon and no-one really seemed to be upset.. they all just said "ohh well have to train for a few more days"....Great guys and girls thata these open water swimmers are.

Featured in the Picture with yours truley is Poliana of Brazil, a very accomplished open water swimmer and Olympian. Not to mention an awesome person and peir amoungst the open water swimmers. (hopefully i'll be able to get some swimming shots of her over the next few days)
i'm sure she's going to rock it.

I have a few video clips that need posting , so i'll get on that tomorrow.
Cheers

She did it again

Chrissie Wellingotn did it again today,
She won yet another Iron distance race and in the process set a new world record.
be be the new world record holder you know have to go 8:31:59. well actually you have to go one second quicker.
The race was made interesting , by Bek Keat having a slightly quicker run split than Wellington and finishing just seven mintues down. Then there was Catriona Morrison placing 3rd in her first ever Iron distance race. All these talented athletes are of course wearing blueseventy.

More photos to come.
See above , Chrissie smiling as she does during the marathon.

Swim day part four

Now we have Ain-Alar,
This guy can ride a bike and had the fastest bike split at Kona last year !!
So while alot of eyes will be looking at Normann, Ain is certainly going to be tough to out-split during the bike. For a guy thats weighs 100kg, he can still run 3 hours or even sub 3 hour marathons off the bike!! Impressive!!!!...very impressive!!

swim day part 3

Third was Richard Uusher,
A new edition to the blueseventy family, yet probably one of the toughest guys out there,
Having been the world adventure racing champion on more than one occasion , his hurt box is pretty massive , Imagine racing for 7 days and getting and average of 2 hours sleep a night..(sleeping on rocks and in dirt)
yeah .... ouch.... he thinks Ironman is pretty short!! haha ..

swim day part two

Next up was Chris McDonald, he had a win at Challenge Wanaka this year and is looking good. He's downsized his wetsuit, so he's either shrinking or getting real fit.
Nicest dude, always good catching up with him.

Swim Day part one

turns out today was the day to swim ...as you'll see above

I went down tot the swim start and thought i probably wouldn't bump into any of our pro's.
How -ever lucky me i was wrong again.

As i arrived i saw Merryn Johnston getting into the water, A pro from New-Zealand who also happend to be fluent in German and very awesome.

In Roth with Chrissie

Went down to the pool today for a wee swim with none other than Chrissie Wellington, Ohh how i love to name drop.
Nah.. seriously , it was a good session and Chrisse owned me, i blame German beer and my lack of wetsuit....oh and having no muscles... ( i guess you can see the picture)

later we went for a ride on the bike course and got rained on about 5 times. ideal.
Good day hanging with the champ!! sorry no bike pic's as of yet... the rain and camera's don't really mix well.

She is looking crazy fit and ready to rock.... im scared for the pro men...

IM Frankfurt , and another blueseventy win

In yet another exciting day of racing in Frankfurt, Blueseventy’s own Timo Bracht set a course record in winning his second Ironman European Championship, while Sandra Wallenhorst won the much-anticipated showdown with Yvonne Van Vlerken to take the women's crown in Frankfurt.

Bracht used a blazing 2:43 marathon split to run his way to the men's title today, passing Eneko Llanos with seven km of the marathon remaining and flew into the spectacular finish here at historic Romer, setting a course record with his 7:59:16 finish. Bracht had started the run with last year's champion, Chris McCormack, about three minutes behind Llanos, who had remained ahead of the two men after the swim and through the entire bike ride. Bracht looked like he would have to settle for third after the 2007 Ford Ironman World Champion surged away from him and caught up to Llanos, who finished second to McCormack here a year ago after dueling with the
Australian through the marathon.

Just when it looked likeMcCormack was goin to run his way to another win here in Frankfurt,
he suddenly stopped because of cramps. Bracht flew by McCormack and surged past Llanos into the lead. McCormack hung on for third, followed by Andreas Raelert, who had led for parts of the swim and bike today before slowing dramatically at the start of the marathon. Raelert,
competing in only his second Ironman, gathered himself and finished a solid fourth. Rounding
out the top five was Mathias Hecht.
1 Bracht, Timo 10/3/1 34/MPRO 00:47:45 04:24:51 02:43:06 07:59:15
2 Llanos, Eneko 2/1/2 33/MPRO 00:44:59 04:24:24 02:47:21 08:00:21

Normann Stadler

I arrived in Germany safe and sound, I know alot of you were worried. hmmm
Anyway on to more important news.

Today Normann Stadler came in to see us , it's just over a week before his start at Challenge Roth,
He looks fit and relaxed.
The new addiction to his family a baby boy seems to have mellowed him out. He is a very proud dad.. this relaxed Dad is definatley looking like he's ready to roll next weekend.

Everything seems to be working in Stadlers favor this year, He has a new team ( commerzbank) some great teams mates, a solid training block and a quiet baby that likes to sleep. What more can he ask for ? it's a perfect build up to Challenge Roth.

I think this is one of the first times i've had a normal relaxed chat with the two times IM world Champion. It's hard to get a relaxed man , when you meet him right before the biggest race of the year (KONA)
But this time round we found ourselves talking about other athletes and generally gossiping. (as triathletes do) all good stuff though!!!
A really nice guy, who happens to be damn fast.... i guess thats an understatement... but you know already...

I was going to talk smack to him and tell him i was going to ride him off my wheel, but we all
know i would have just looked like an ass...maybe next time.
I should be meeting Normann again early next week, so i'll keep you posted

Cheers
Guy

PS: that cut on my nose, was an unfortunate accident, i had a bad dream and woke up suddenly , got a fright , then slammed my head into the side of the couch. Nose bleed and everything. Haha, kind of funny in hind sight. only in hind sight mind you!!!

Bend , OR

Just turned up to Matt Lieto's pad in Bend Oregan, What an amazing place. Not that Matt wants me to tell any-one. He likes his town the way it is....whoops

We are racing Pacific Crest half Ironman tomorrow , so hopefully the altitude doesn't kill me. I'll keep you posted on that one. Ran for like 100 meters today and it wasn't pretty... I'm more than a little concerned .. Ohh well , it's looking to be a cracker of a day tomorrow and the break pads aren't rubbing on the bike... so things aren't all bad. lol

I'll post my pain after the race.
Thanks for letting me stay Matt. aka Mr Nice ( he doesnt know where he got that label)

IM CDA

Well its 11pm and i'm a bout to shoot down to the finish line and watch the last of the finishers
come in ,

But i thought i'd quickly update you .

Conditions looked great this morning , light breeze and the temperature was cool but not freezing... Shame i can't say it stayed like that.

The pro swim start was at 6:25am and the age groupers at 7am .
first out of the water was Flanagan and then the main group of contenders including Rhodes and Pontano.

Kate Major and heather Wurtele were close only seperated by a few second come the end of the swim. It was dark horse Tyler Stewart that came from behind and rode 4:59 to take a demanding lead heading out on to the run. This lead would prove to be too much for Major and Wurtele to close and Stewart came home for her first IM Win ....A surperb victory for a talented lady.

The mens race was an interested affair , Bryan Rhodes lost his pedal and contact with Potano .
Pontano then went on to take controll of the race and never looked back .
American TJ tollakson had a great swim , bike , run combo to come in for second place and rounding out the top three was the funny man "Max Longree" from Germany , who ran his way through the field to finish on the podium.

Congrats to every-one for a great race and toughing it out in those cold conditions

I'm off to the finish.
More to come in the next few days. More Photo's and blogs...

Wicked

PS: I had a media pass for the event and was shooting , after some encouraging words from my boss " ie: don't die" i was out on the back of a massive motor bike. going silly fast...."loved it"

Flowen the coup

I've left NZ and i'm now in Coeur d'Alene for an
Ironman event.
This is our House with Shawn and Scott striking there dashing poses out the front.

But in more exciting news. (Sorry Shawn, and Scott)
I got to catch up with Kim Loeffler and her twin sister Kelly today.
Kellys back and racing in the pro ranks and Kim is getting back into some really great form.
it's hard to tell as these two girls look super fit all the time..... I feel like the guy who ate all the pies when i hang out with them!!!.... maybe i need to go on a diet.

I managed to get this snap of them after a swim this morning.
I think it's a goodie.

There will be more to come from the twins and other pros, ( as i will be postiung interviews with over the next few days )
I have some questions lined up.... i worked on them during my 12 hour flight over here...

After being awake for 36 hours the questions started to get a little crazy ...
lets see how thats pans out.. Watch this space over the next few days

I also attached a few pic's of the swim this morning. it was choppy, but the water temp is quite nice compared to past years .

I'm getting grief about not updating this blog... (By the 2-3 people that read it)
So here's my update.

It's cold and raining in New Zealand , I'm getting wet alot .....

I went for a long run in the weekend in 5 degree weather , heavy rain and a fair bit of wind..
I didnt mind untill i fell over in the mud in front of a bunch women doing there morning walk.
Now your probably thinking , thats not that bad.
But what you don't understand is that i landed on my face!!! yes my face .. You know when people plant grass and the soil is really soft ... mix that with crap loads of rain and you have a very very muddy area...... I totally ate it .. I had mud down my pants in my jacket , in my mouth .. and i had a bunch of women laughing hysterically at me....

Ohh the good times.... usually you'd get up and pretend nothing happened.. But it's really hard to do that when you are head to toe covered in mud... So i decided that i'd lye down in the gutter and try and get the rain water to wash the mud from my face... Alass it didnt work that well...
For the rest of the run i felt like a star, every-one was staring at me...
I just pretended i was famous!!

So there you have it an update!!!
I often wonder why i didnt just run 3 feet to the left and avoid the whole muddy area!!!
Issues i say ... issues!!!

I wish i had a picture for you .. but you'll have to use your imagination!!
I just wish i was wearing my rubber jacket!!

Mud in Transition and T1

IM Auzzy .. back in NZ

Wow i'm back in NZ and looking back through the photo's from IM Australia.
The condiction were a little damp to say the least. Check out the picture of T1.. (At least your wet already. What a day for Chrissie though, first from start to finish!!! Damn....shes fast!!

Check out her series of photos. Swim = smiles, bike = smiles, run = smiles.. she actually waves at people all the time!! cracks me up.... The only time i wave at people in a race is when i'm trying to wave down the ambulance...
The mens race was a bit more closely fought out. great to watch Deboom back in action. I'm sure we'll see him back and harder than ever come Kona time!!
I'll let the pictures speak for me now.. check them!!!
PS: NZ is getting freaking cold!! thought you'd like to know..

Mitch's road to recovery

OUCH

Good as new

I caught up with Mitch Anderson yesterday evening.
Now most of us at some point have suffered from road rash. ( very unpleasant and painful)
Mitch doesn’t like to do things by halves and 3 weeks ago (in his build up to IM Australia) he had a wee accident when he stopped his bike using his face as the breaks. (PAIN)

Mitch had the accident in central Melbourne (Docklands precinct) when out on a training ride.
He has made an Impressive recovery and his face is back to normal. He probably got favoritism because he’s a Doctor . Where the rest of us would be scar face's, Mitch looks like he stepped out of a salon!!! He probably deserves it after 12 years of studying.
For skin issues… just ask Mitch!!! He has the remedy!!!!!

lets hope Mitch has a great 2009 season, he certainly deserves it after a troubled 2008 season where he buggered ( not sure of the medical issue) his Achilles, which left him on crutches come Kona time .
He seemed pretty mellow and in good spirits yesterday so hopefully thats a sign of a good race ahead.

Mitch trains full time and also does one all nighter (doctoring) shift at the hospital every week. Although he does admit to having naps during his shifts . He needs them because after his shift he meets Luke Bell at the local café for a long ride. All night shift at the hospital followed by a long ride = PAIN

He's a busy boy, having just finished renovating his house, training full time , working and writing for triathlon Multisport sport Magazine . He’s yet to do a feature on me. But I’m sure that will come soon, right Mitch!! (probably will once he reads my dyslexic chicken scribbles, not sure it will be a good thing)

Check out Mitch’s website for more info http://www.mitchellanderson.com/home

Calf off ( i think Chrissie has it, Your right Tim ," it's probably just the light"!!)

Chrissie Trying to get in on the photo action

Chrissie doing her thing!!

This Morning i thought i'd catch up with Tim and Chrissie.
Turns out Friday Morning for these two is a busy time, they were jostling between the media briefing and IM live interviews.
They had a bit of time between interviews to catch up with me. (actually they were going to get a coffee and i just went along)
Both look super fit and are eager to get out there and race!!! Infact Chrissie is so hyper active if she doesn't race soon she's going to explode.
I think her calve's have shrunk though? Jokes i think they have there our solar system!!
We have a calf off each time we catch up and i'm starting to think my legs look like chicken drum sticks!!! I really don't think it's good for my self esteem!! But then niether is riding with her!!
At least i didn't do that this time!!! Getting dropped on an easy spin isn't cool!!

Tim , is a cool dude with a great sense or humour, He cracks me up.
Hopefully we'll be bale to catch up with them both in a bit more detail before they go.
if you want to me to ask a question , write it in the notes on this page. make it cool questions.
Chrissie and Tim want new questions. They get the same ones over and over again.

Ok i'll post laters!! G

Photo's are off Tim and Chrissie having a Calf off.
Tim Pic, with Chrissie trying to get in on the action
Chrissie loving the camera!!!

I dominated the body surf

I thought i'd show Maik how body surfing was done . (See post below)Unfortunately i ran out of talent half way through my body surfing experience and got nailed..
I guess i don't have to go into any depth as the sequence tells the tail. needless to say the Dresdner boys who were watching (Scott and Maik) aren't going to be taking tips from me in the body surfing department...(this is one of many failed attempts)

Maik and his goggles

So i Finally managed to catch up With Maik Twelsiek from Dresdner Kleinwort,
We thought it was going to be best to meet up at the beach and trial his new gear!!
Unfortunately that same Shore break that has been hitting the Mooloolaba shores was now hitting the Noosa shore. That didn't stop Maik from getting out there, Even a lost pair of goggles from a wave breaking on top of him didn't dampen his spirts.. Was very funny to watch though!!

Amanda came to the resue with another pair of goggles and friendly advice!!! I'm not sure he was keen to venture back out into the swell for another drilling though.
Maik is one of the most friendly guys your ever met. Always keen to catch up for a chat. After his 14th place at Kona last year , he proved he can mix it with the best!! He'll be one to watch come next Sunday!!!

Thursday 26 March 2009

Shorey

Mooloolaba Is a rad place with a bad ass shorey. ( For those of you that don't know what a shorey is) It's a wave that breaks in like a foot of water and nails you.
For the boys and girls in the ITU race on Sunday , you will be enjoying this said Shorey!!!
The good times!!!

Today we went to the local pool to meet up With Maiki from Dresdner Kleinwort.
Now this swim squad starts at 9:30am and is the who's who of triathlon.
Lucky i was there to grace them with my super abilities. (Hopefully none of them would have to perform CRP)

Unfortunately time wasn't on my side and i was unable to unleash my " drowning cat style of swimming on them!!! " next time...

It was a quick catch up with Maiki and a few others then off to Mooloolaba to see Graham O'Grady or GOG as you may know him!!!

I will post again on Maiki and the boys from Dresdner soon.... I know your excited.. I can smell it on you ....
